Sun Ra: Do the Impossible
Poet, philosopher, Egyptologist, bandleader. The jazz visionary Sun Ra was all of these things – and much more besides. With his ever-evolving band, the Sun Ra Arkestra, he produced more than 200 albums, pushing the boundaries of free jazz. At the same time, he wove together elements of ancient Egypt, interstellar metaphors and scientific musings into a unique musical and spiritual vision of Afrofuturism that continues to resonate today. Director Christine Turner embarks on an insightful journey through the life of this multifaceted artist, featuring recollections from band members and dancers of the Arkestra, interviews with musicologists (including DJ Spooky) and unforgettable film and concert footage of Sun Ra himself. An informative, inspiring and overwhelming portrait of a man whose bold vision and uncompromising art shaped not only the sound of jazz but also the cultural landscape of the 20th century and beyond.
