Some Interviews on Personal Matters
The international breakthrough and most successful film by Lana Gogoberidze revolves around journalist Sofiko, who is deeply dedicated to her work but struggles with the ghosts of the past while her husband leaves her for a younger woman. Sofiko interviews women of all generations about their life circumstances, creating a polyphonic study of female experiences. This film narrowly escaped censorship.
"It is the first film," said Andrei Sakharov, "that precisely and unflinchingly depicts the appalling state of fear in which Soviet people constantly live." Bettina Schulte Strathaus adds: "Rarely has private life been portrayed as politically in the cinema of the Soviet Union and its republics. Unlike many of her female colleagues, Lana Gogoberidze has never felt the need to distance herself from a feminist perspective. She leaves no doubt that equality does not exist, and for her, freedom always takes precedence over peace and harmony."
