Some Came Running

Dave Hirsch (Frank Sinatra), a World War II veteran, is drunkenly put on a bus and unintentionally wakes up again in the small town in the Midwest where he grew up and never wanted to return to. Unable to leave again, he seeks the companionship and friendship of professional gambler Bama Dillert (Dean Martin). Most of the town's residents try to hide their depression and interpersonal neglect behind a facade of decency and ostentatious consumption, led by Dave's brother, a respected businessman. Only Bama confronts the hypocrisy with dismantling honesty.

When Dave sets his mind on marrying the simple-minded Ginnie (Shirley MacLaine) instead of following the call of true love to the virtuous intellectual Gwen French (Martha Hyer), Bama intervenes and speaks painfully honest truths. The voice of reason, even if it goes far beyond the bounds of everyday toxic masculinity, paves the way for a dramatic final act.
