Simon Messner – Aus dem Schatten
When Simon Messner, the only son of mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner, sets out in the summer of 2025 to attempt the first ascent of the spectacular 6,754-metre Chumik Kangri in Pakistan’s Karakoram range, he finds himself at a turning point in his life.
Having chosen to become a climber against his father’s wishes and overcome his fear of heights, he has completed more than forty first ascents in recent years. But as he becomes a father to a daughter himself, the experience of adventure begins to feel different for the first time.
Shaped by the emotional distance from his father, Simon begins to question not only the impending ascent but also the motivation that has driven him for so many years. Why pursue something that could cost him everything? And what does it mean to be both a mountaineer and a father?
Set against the spectacular expedition footage from one of the last untouched mountain regions in the world, the film tells a story of searching for one’s place in life, between the longing for freedom and the responsibility towards family.
Alongside Simon Messner, close family members such as his mother Sabine, his sister Magdalena, and his wife Anna also speak, reflecting on the experience of waiting at home and shifting gender roles.
On the way to the summit, external and internal landscapes merge. High above, in the vastness of the glacier, Simon is faced with a decision about how much risk he is willing to take—and what kind of life he wants to live.
