Sichtbares und Verborgenes
A family portrait poised between remembering and repressing, knowing and not knowing. Anja Salomonowitz invites three women to recount their youth during the Nazi era: Great-aunt Hanka survived Auschwitz, yet finds no words for what she cannot forget. Gertrude, a former nanny and a socialist, recalls the deportation of Jewish acquaintances. Grandmother Margit, who lived in Graz, initially claims that she can no longer remember much. Through calm, deliberately composed shots, the filmmaker provides space for these conversations, allowing contradictions to remain unresolved.
"About the Jewish Wig" ("Über die jüdische Perücke") was created in 2026 for the Jewish Museum Vienna; it explores the many questions surrounding the "sheitel"—the wig that Orthodox Jewish women wear to cover their hair after marriage. (Florian Widegger)
