Shahid
An absurd and wildly imaginative work somewhere between reality and fiction, theatre and musical. Director Narges Shahid Kalhor has herself portrayed by an actress. She wants to remove the “Shahid” (“martyr”) from her family name, turning the name change into a personal mission. Then her heroic great-grandfather appears – a man who was declared a martyr in Iran 100 years ago and passed the name on to his descendants. He tries to dissuade his great-granddaughter from her plan and now accompanies her journey with his dancing companions. Meanwhile, the Bavarian district administration sends the protagonist to a psychologist, who also happens to have a difficult name…
Everyone fails: the director against bureaucracy, the actress against the director’s demands, the great-grandfather against his great-granddaughter’s determination, and the film itself against its own ambitions. The winds of history carry them through the German stage-set city in ever-new loops, and through the film within the film, where labels and privileges are shaken up through performance, fabulation, and documentary storytelling – with immense joy. Ambiguous and autofictional, filled with tableaux, songs, and poems, the result is a tragicomic and defiant act of self-empowerment in exile.
