Scarlet Street

On his way home one night, an unassuming accountant rushes to the aid of a woman being beaten by a man in the street. His willingness to help comes at a price: increasingly captivated by her beauty, he begins a visible downward spiral… In many respects, this is the dark mirror image of "The Woman in the Window": once again, an inconspicuous man takes center stage; once again, a portrait plays a pivotal role; and once again, there is a crime for which the wrong person seemingly pays the price. But what constitutes the "right" punishment? This question preoccupies Lang here more than in any of his other films. The artistic freedom he enjoys with his own production company propels him—albeit briefly—to the pinnacle of Hollywood.
