Saturn und die Wunderwelt des frühen Kinos

Duration57min.

LanguageFrench

Early cinema found its first audiences at fairs and amusement parks. Most films came from French production companies and covered a wide range of genres: fairy tales, grotesques, chase scenes, and animated films with astonishing visual effects. Early cinema was certainly colorful and flamboyant, sometimes bawdy, and often very body-conscious. The Viennese company Saturn specialized in erotic depictions and became an international brand with its production of "racy" films between 1905 and 1910. Nikolaus Wostry presents a selection of newly restored Saturn films in comparison to international productions of the time. This reveals how Saturn managed to combine cinematic erotica with the broad genre spectrum of early cinema.
