Samurai Vengeance
A Kabuki performance of *The 47 Ronin*, staged on a snowy night in 1810 at the Morita-za Theatre in old Edo, unexpectedly spills out into the street in a bloody continuation. A seemingly mysterious woman in a red kimono confronts Sakubei, a crude local thug, and challenges him to a fight. The woman is revealed to be the young Kikunosuke Ino in disguise, who has come to avenge his father.
The playwright Shinoda orders the theatre lanterns to be turned on the two combatants like stage lights. Before a stunned crowd, a fierce sword fight unfolds, ending with the young Kikunosuke victorious and his opponent decapitated. Kikunosuke then disappears into the night, and the event becomes part of Edo’s legend.
Several months later, a cheerful and perpetually hungry ronin named Soichiro Kase arrives at the theatre and begins asking questions. Something about the story does not add up. Little by little, he draws statements from the members of the theatre troupe, and the celebrated murder takes on unexpected new dimensions.
