Sambizanga
Luanda, 1961: Domingos Xavier, a labourer, becomes politically active in opposition to the Portuguese colonial power, whilst his wife Maria, unaware of his involvement, sets out on a long journey to find him after he suddenly disappears. Always accompanied by her child and driven by a determination to understand the world beyond the high walls of the political system, the protagonist embodies a symbol of female resilience and the relevance of women in the revolution. Amidst documentary footage, scenes of waiting, longing and moving forward, this work stands as a historical record of the Angolan War of Independence. Activists on the big screen and a language of love inextricably linked to the language of necessary revolt!
