Roberto Rossellini. Living Without a Script
“They don’t accept that I want to do something different.” Rossellini has no interest in the glamorous world of Hollywood, in which his wife Ingrid Bergman moves. The invitation from Indian Prime Minister Nehru comes as if sent by God. Rossellini is to document the developments in the newly independent country. He throws himself headlong into the project, pouring all his creative energy into it, and travels to India. There, Rossellini rediscovers his inspiration – and also a new love. The film paints a portrait of an exceptionally prolific director who is not afraid of new trends and who makes television films in the 1960s. Companions and family members share their thoughts in letters, thus rounding out the picture of a man who surrounded himself with family and friends alike on the film set.
