Almost penniless and bruised, ex-porn star Mike Saber (Simon Rex) returns to his home in the small town of Texas City after 17 years. His ex Lexi (Bree Elrod) and her mother Lil (Brenda Deiss) reluctantly take him in on the condition that he make himself useful.
Just as the dysfunctional family seems to be getting back together, Mike meets the young, cheerful Strawberry (Suzanna Son) behind the counter of a doughnut shop and falls back into old habits with her. Because she could be his ticket back to the porn business that once made him big.
RED ROCKET celebrated its premiere in July 2021 in the Palme d'Or competition at the Cannes International Film Festival. The character of Mike Saber seems perfectly tailored for Simon Rex, who won the Independent Spirit Award for ‘Best Leading Actor’ in 2022.
Rex himself became somewhat famous over 20 years ago with his masturbation videos before establishing himself as an actor.
In a tragicomic way, Sean Baker tells the story of bizarre characters who lead their lives on the margins of society with self-confidence and pride. Tightly staged, entertaining and often touching, RED ROCKET is an ambitious film that is also relevant in a wonderfully unobtrusive way.
