Rancho Notorious
Cowboy Vern is searching for the man who murdered his fiancée. His trail leads him to the remote Chuck-a-Luck ranch, where a former saloon girl provides shelter to outlaws in exchange for a share of their loot… RANCHO NOTORIOUS is anything but an ordinary Western: filmed entirely in a studio, the use of rear projection and artificial landscapes highlights the film’s "constructed" nature—with Marlene Dietrich at its center, appearing both aged and ageless as she revisits her earlier roles as a wicked temptress. Tony Rayns notes: "The fateful morality, the consistent avoidance of any naturalism, and the weaving of a ballad into the plot make this a genuinely Langian work. If one were to add a political stance, one could almost call it Brechtian." (Florian Widegger)
