"Our director is a madman!" With these words, silent film star Gloria Swanson sealed the fate of the film three months after it began shooting. Together with her lover (the father of future US President John F. Kennedy) and Erich von Stroheim – "the man you love to hate" – she planned to conquer the big screen with this independently produced epic, but had to realize that the story of a young woman who is made queen for a night by a decadent prince would probably never pass censorship. As extravagant as the on-screen debauchery might be, von Stroheim's obsession with detail, which once again exceeded the budget, was even more excessive… This new reconstruction is nothing short of sensational and also reconstructs the end of this Hollywood fever dream.
