Purehearted
Majimu lives with her mother and grandmother in Naha and works as an ordinary office employee at a faceless corporation, where her days are dominated by routine tasks. Yet she comes from a family that has been making tofu for generations. During a visit to a bar with her eccentric grandmother, she discovers the distinctive taste of rum made from fresh sugarcane juice. When she learns that sugarcane grows abundantly in Okinawa, Majimu begins dreaming of making her own original Okinawan rum. An opportunity arises when her company announces an ideas competition. Gathering all her courage, she submits a proposal to produce agricole rum from sugarcane grown on one of Okinawa’s outlying islands. What begins as a spontaneous idea soon develops into an ambitious project that challenges her family, her colleagues, and the island community alike. Faced with scepticism and open resistance, Majimu discovers a determination she never knew she possessed and is ready to pursue her vision against all odds. The wisdom of her grandmother and the warmth of Okinawa support her along the way, but failure remains a very real possibility.
