17:30 Introduction with Klaus Davidowicz
With the adaptation of his father Friedrich's theatre play, Konrad Wolf - who had already shot STERNE for DEFA in 1959 - succeeded in capturing images of Jews and their persecution on the screen in such a way that they became engrained in the consciousness of the audience and later found their way into other representations. The film made politics of extermination more imaginable and explainable than books ever could. (Klaus Davidowicz)
