In 1984, Margaret Thatcher’s government announced plans to close unprofitable nationalised coal mines across the UK. The miners, led by their powerful trade union, went on strike. They received financial and other support from across the country. Among the groups declaring solidarity with the miners is the LGSM. ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’, an activist group from London, raises money and voices support because they no longer wish to tolerate the oppression that both the miners and they themselves face from the government, the police and the media. The trade unionists, on the other hand, want nothing to do with this kind of support. The residents of the Welsh village of Dulais, who make their living from mining, see things quite differently after a brief hesitation. Their invitation is gladly accepted, and so two completely different groups of people come together. (according to programmkino.de, kino.de)

“As befits a successful comedy, there is no shortage of tragic elements either. Whether it’s jealous intrigues, homophobic violence or the personal problems of the rebel Mark. In the end, of course, hatred and prejudice don’t stand a chance. The good guys win, and not just in this ‘feel-good movie’ – after all, it is a true story.”
