Among Jarman’s short films, his cinematic portraits of friends and lovers stand out—captured in intimate settings with a handheld camera. Through the combination of a low frame rate, slight wide-angle lens, and sequences edited directly in-camera, he succeeds in capturing the magic of the moment. The result is disarmingly intimate, gently erotic portraits.

Simon Fisher Turner, who collaborated with Jarman over many years, will accompany the silent films in this program live on piano with his own compositions on March 20. (James McKay)
