Ferlach in Carinthia is renowned for the traditional craft of gunmaking. History has left a deep mark on this small town, situated near the Slovenian border. Where the Wehrmacht and partisans once fought each other, shotguns are still produced today, and local customs continue to play a major role. ‘Piliji’ (translated: the gunsmiths) is a quiet, observational film. The old battles are over, but they have left their mark – both visible and invisible. Samira Fux does not pass judgement; she watches and listens closely, and through her finely crafted contextualisation, the full complexity of Koroška/Carinthia as a border region is revealed.
