Pariah
Seventeen-year-old Alike from the Bronx appears as a ‘flower on the scrapheap’ of human relationships, her personality lying somewhere between the masked personas behind which she tries to hide for fear of rejection. Through her self-penned poetry, beats and Bradford Young’s colour palettes, we are invited to peer into the depths of her soul, to accompany her on her exploration of her homosexuality. Things become complex and complicated as crises begin to brew in every area of her life. What began as a short film to mark the completion of her studies at NYU is now PARIAH: a work that derives its distinctive intimacy and empathy from partly autobiographical paraphrases and four years of maturation.
