Ovidio & The Last Rail
As part of the ADA Directors Screenings, we welcome Colombian director, screenwriter, and editor Iván Marín Díaz to Vienna’s Votivkino. Screenings will feature his documentary "OVIDIO" and the fictional short film "THE LAST RAIL"—two works created entirely in Colombia’s coffee region.
OVIDIO | 2024 | 25 min
"OVIDIO" follows 79-year-old shoemaker Ovidio González, who has been battling terminal cancer and unbearable pain for years. Although assisted dying is legally permitted in Colombia, for a long time, no one was actually able to exercise this right. Determined to die with dignity, Ovidio and his family confront religious opposition, political interference, and a healthcare system facing—for the first time—an individual intent on asserting his right to a self-determined death.
The documentary views cinema as a means of raising public awareness and a potential catalyst for political change. "OVIDIO" has been screened at eleven festivals and won "Best Short Documentary" at both Festicinerío and the Ecos Shorts Festival.
THE LAST RAIL – EL ÚLTIMO RIEL | 2017 | 30 min
In "THE LAST RAIL", elderly Fabio Hernández lives in a station along the defunct Caldas railway line. Upon learning that he must vacate the building—which is designated as a national cultural heritage site—he embarks on a journey along old roads, paths, and railway tracks. He seeks out other residents of the former stations who, like him, wish to resist their displacement.
This 30-minute fictional short film blends historical memory with a story about aging, home, and resistance. "THE LAST RAIL" won "Best National Short Film" at the 2019 Bogotá Film Festival and was screened at events including Siembra Fest and the Ituango Film Festival. Following the two films, we look forward to an English-language Q&A with Iván Marín Díaz, moderated by Austrian director and producer Barbara Windtner.
