Queen Elizabeth I lies on her deathbed, with Orlando (Tilda Swinton) by her side. Orlando is promised an inheritance – on one condition: that he must not die, must not wither away, must not grow old. No sooner said than done, and so, in his immortality, Orlando devotes himself to poetry and art. Decades pass, and after many years of diplomatic work, Orlando goes into battle for the first time. Afterwards, Orlando awakens and is female. From now on, Orlando is known as Lady Orlando and continues to face the real battlefields of everyday life with composure: politics, patriarchy, love.
