Orlac’s Hände
With live music by Gerhard Gruber
Piano virtuoso Paul Orlac loses both hands in a railway accident. A surgeon agrees to go to extremes and transplants the hands of a robbery victim. Orlac is shaken to the core by this realisation and threatens to lose his mind, as it is not only his beloved profession and harmonious married life that are at risk. The new hands also seem to develop an evil life of their own ... This classic of Austrian film history is also considered a masterpiece of the horror genre, combining realistic crime film motifs with elements of psychology and reflecting the collective state of consciousness of the uncertain 1920s. A late-expressionist spectacle of light and shadow, thrilling right up to the last scene and carried by Veidt's powerful performance. (Kristina Höch/red)
