Only Ghosts in the Waves

The Mediterranean island of Lampedusa is now known as a destination for people fleeing to Europe. For Enrico, the undertaker whom this film follows, it is home. The daily confrontation with the consequences of European migration policy has left a deep mark on him and triggered a change of heart. He speaks of his doubts about God and his efforts to bury the victims of the numerous boat accidents as dignifiedly as possible – in close-ups and in deliberate, almost postcard-like images of this place, which usually looks very different in the media.
