On the Road (En El Camino)

Veneno, a sex worker and drug dealer on the run from a nightmarish past, has made the hypermasculine world of Mexican long-haul truckers his hunting ground. There he meets the taciturn Muñeco, an older driver who gives Veneno a ride and covers for him in his dealings—in exchange for a cut, of course. On the vast highways of northern Mexico, the men’s initial familiarity blossoms into a tender bond. Yet the violence that defines both their lives accompanies them every mile of the way.

How can intimacy and love survive in places of the most brutal darkness? Based on the real-life experiences of Mexican long-haul truckers, "ON THE ROAD – EN EL CAMINO" takes its audience into an abysmal world of lost souls, some of whom fight mercilessly for their place on the highways of northern Mexico. A provocative, grippingly emotional film in which sensuality and danger are inextricably linked. Very sexy, very honest—and, despite its harshness, deeply moving. In Venice, director David Pablos won the Grand Prize in the Orizzonti section as well as the Queer Lion for his uncompromisingly queer thriller.
