When nine-year-old Ella is woken early one morning by her widowed father and told to quickly pack her most treasured and important belongings, she senses that this is no ordinary family trip. While her little brother Charlie excitedly assumes that their journey in the aging car is taking them to Disneyland, Ella suspects they are more likely moving to a new home, especially since they have brought along the family dog, Max. Quietly and increasingly concerned, she watches her grieving father, who avoids answering her questions about the purpose and destination of their journey.
Their long road trip takes them in stages across the vast and rugged landscapes of the southwestern United States, all the way to Nebraska. In Omaha, the siblings and their father visit the zoo, but this is not their final destination …
