O Gebo e a sombra (GEBO AND THE SHADOW)
At the age of 103, the Portuguese master—who has remained young at heart (a term finally truly appropriate here)—Manoel de Oliveira created his final feature film, based on a four-act play from 1923. To avoid losing his daughter-in-law, Gebo, an accountant who has since grown frail, spent years fabricating news about his long-lost son. It is a lie that holds up until the day the son actually reappears... This intimate, focused drama makes no attempt to hide its theatrical origins: within the sparsely furnished, dimly lit living room, the viewer can fully immerse themselves in the performances of an outstanding ensemble of great European acting legends at the peak of their craft. A late masterpiece in the truest sense!
