Nothing But a Man
*Nothing But a Man*, Roemer’s best-known work to date and his first feature film as both screenwriter and director, was, upon its release, unparalleled in its depiction of everyday African-American life in a small town in Alabama marked by racism. The film is carried by an empathetic direction in crystal-clear black and white (Robert M. Young on camera) and the exceptional performances of the superb cast, including Abbey Lincoln, Ivan Dixon, Gloria Foster and Julius Harris. Through the story of a Black railway worker, Roemer not only explores his personal conflicts but also highlights the interconnection between racism, gender inequality and exploitative working conditions. Although it was recognised as a cinematic milestone from the outset, rediscovered by every generation and cemented its reputation as a modern classic, it took a long time for Nothing But a Man to reach a wider audience.
