Not Wanted
Sally puts all her eggs in one basket: the 20-year-old follows her beloved, the pianist Steve, to another city, carried by the hope of a life together. But suddenly he wants nothing more to do with her. In a foreign place, she realises that she now has two heavy burdens to bear: a broken heart and a new life growing inside her. After director Elmer Clifton drops out for health reasons, Ida Lupino takes over the directing duties for the first time and turns the material into a remarkably sensitive melodrama. With a sure instinct, she brings a then taboo subject to the screen and enables Sally Forrest to give an unusually nuanced, touching performance in her first role.
