Completely isolated from the outside world, four children grow up in a small apartment in Tokyo. One day, when their mother fails to return home, they open the door for the first time and cautiously take their first steps into the world beyond. What begins as an intimate chamber drama gradually expands its horizons, just as its young protagonists do. Based on true events, the film is both deeply moving and quietly profound. Remarkably, the then 12-year-old Yūya Yagira won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his extraordinary performance. (Florian Widegger)
