N’mav čez izaro + Objects in the rear mirror appear closer than they really are
N'mav čez izaro translates roughly from the Slovenian dialect as "A little bit across the lake." Lake Turnersee, originally named Sablatnigsee, was purchased and renamed in the 1920s by SS member Karl Hönck. In the region around the lake, only a few families still linguistically pass on their identity as Carinthian Slovenes. But what has been repressed doesn't disappear; it persists, like the lake itself. *Objects in the rearview mirror appear closer than they really are* is a coming-of-age road movie through the lives of four generations: poetic and fragmentary. Shot on Super 8 and developed by hand, the film unfolds a kaleidoscope of images that reflects on family history through various media. In the end, the realization remains: the personal is structural.
