National Gallery
NATIONAL GALLERY unfolds almost entirely within London's National Gallery, observing how a museum organizes its collection, its audience, and its own history. Wiseman captures guided tours in which art historians discuss painting techniques, iconography, and historical context in front of the original works; conservation studios where paintings are meticulously restored using microscopes and scalpels; and meetings in which budgets, marketing strategies, and institutional partnerships are debated. Time and again, the camera lingers on the paintings themselves, whether in close-up or within the gallery spaces, illuminated by shifting natural light.
A dialogue emerges between the interior and the exterior: inside, an atmosphere of quiet concentration; outside, the traffic of Trafalgar Square, street performers, demonstrations, and queues of visitors. The film moves from a Turner to a Caravaggio, from a children's group to a poetry reading, from a lighting test to a discussion about visitor numbers. Rather than offering a linear "tour" of the collection, Wiseman assembles a series of situations that reveal different ideas of what a museum is—and what it can be.
