Molkarin/Sudesha

From Yugantar Collective

Year 1981

Duration 50 min.

Language Marathi,
Hindi

India’s first feminist film collective, Yugantar, was founded in 1980. Against a backdrop of radical political upheaval in India, the collective produced semi-documentary short films that documented feminist struggles and the unionisation of women workers. At the same time, the films served as educational tools to support these women in their activism.

MOLKARIN
The collective’s first film, Molkarin, documents the formation of a trade union among domestic workers in the city of Pune, showing protest meetings, strikes and the women sharing their experiences of oppression and exploitation. The movement’s protagonists were predominantly Dalit women and migrants from rural areas.

SUDESHA
The second short film, Sudesha, portrays an environmental activist involved in building the Chipko movement in her village at the foothills of the Himalayas, where local communities are resisting the timber industry. Alongside protecting the forest, the eco-feminists face major challenges arising from gender inequality and alcoholism among men in the community.
