Meine keine Familie
We are screening MEINE KEINE FAMILIE as both a counterpoint and an invitation to engage. An examination of Otto Mühl should not insist solely on his art-historical significance, but must also make power, violence, and the perspectives of those affected and exploited visible. Because artistic significance does not provide moral absolution.
Communal ownership, free sexuality, and the dissolution of the nuclear family—these were the founding principles of Friedrichshof, the largest commune in Europe, established by Viennese Actionist Otto Mühl in the early 1970s.
Director Paul-Julien Robert, who was born into the commune, embarks in MEINE KEINE FAMILIE on a personal journey into his own past. Drawing on archival material being shown publicly for the first time, he confronts himself and his mother with the question: What is family?
