Senegal, 1917: When his 17-year-old son Thierno is forcibly recruited by the French army, shepherd Bakary Diallo volunteers for military service. Father and son are taken to Europe, where they are to fight for the colonial power France. While Bakary leaves no stone unturned to ensure his son's survival, he comes under the influence of the French lieutenant Chambreau. Gradually, Thierno begins to oppose his father.
