Meeting the Buddha
How did Tibetan Buddhism make its way from the peaks of the Himalayas to Europe? MEETING THE BUDDHA tells the extraordinary story of the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, and the Danish couple Hannah and Ole Nydahl, who became key pioneers of Buddhism in the West starting in the late 1960s. Set against a backdrop of hippie culture, a thirst for adventure, and a spiritual quest, the film paints a fascinating portrait of individuals who had the courage to forge new paths – and, in doing so, inspired millions. Director Marta György Kessler weaves together rare archival footage, striking animations, and personal interviews to create a visually compelling documentary about friendship and the power of lived convictions. An international co-production involving Hungary, Germany, Denmark, the UK, and Australia, the film offers an intimate and moving look at the history of a spiritual movement deeply rooted in Tibet’s past – one whose influence continues to be felt worldwide. It is no wonder that the film has become a favourite at international festivals in 2025.
