Mamá

Year2022

Duration80min.

Xun Sero belongs to the indigenous Tzotzil people. Because he grew up without a father, he was mocked and ostracised by many in his village in southern Mexico. For a long time, he blamed his mother Hilda, with whom he has a love-hate relationship. As a young adult and budding director, he slowly begins to reflect on his behaviour. He decides to make a film about his mother. Questions that have never been asked, repressed traumas and unspoken conflicts come to the surface.

With a hand-held camera and many questions in his luggage, he accompanies his mother on her daily journeys. Little by little, not only does a portrait of an unusually courageous woman emerge, but also a picture of a society in which violence against women is the order of the day. The question "Mamá, who are you?", which Xun Sero took as the starting point for his own family history, allows him to reflect on the social structures in Mexico. At the same time, his unsparingly honest film debut also documents the lives of indigenous people in Chiapas and thus the traditions and lifestyles of a marginalised population group.
