Lydia

FromJulien Duvivier

WithMerle Oberon, Joseph Cotten, Alan Marshal, Hans Yaray, u.a.

Year1941

Duration104min.

The first film made by Julien Duvivier during his American exile, where he became one of the most committed representatives of the "France Forever" movement together with Charles Boyer, Jean Gabin and Michèle Morgan, who supported De Gaulle's exile government in the fight against the Nazi occupation and the Vichy regime. Lydia is the portrait of a self-confident and self-determined woman of the better society at the end of the 19th century, who dedicated her life to the philanthropic support of blind children and forgot to consider marriage. The project is a free remake of Un carnet de bal (1937). Unlike the 'original', however, Lydia is not about the botched lives of the former suitors, but rather about the fact that each of them was only chasing after an ideal of a woman without actually being interested in her.
