Lullaby to My Father
The second part of the experimental diptych, which Gitai dedicated to his parents, is about his father, the architect Munio Gitai Weinraub, who was accused of "betraying the German people" and had to flee to Palestine to escape persecution by the Nazis. Through reenactments and letters read by Jeanne Moreau and Hanna Schygulla, we follow this incredible life story. Gitai describes the film as "a journey in search of the connections between a father and his son, architecture and film, the story of a journey and intimate memories. As in my film Carmel, which is based on my mother's letters, there is no chronological sequence of events. It is not a biography, but a mosaic. The story emerges piece by piece, as a poetic association of images, faces, journeys, real architecture and fictional interludes." (Jurij Meden)
