L’inhumaine (DIE UNMENSCHLICHE)
A celebrated singer, an obsessive scientist, a house full of eccentric guests—and in between, a fever dream of architecture, fashion, and the avant-garde. While L’INHUMAINE may superficially tell a story of love, jealousy, and resurrection, L’Herbier is actually interested in the fantastic possibilities that cinema itself offers: tables float on water, bodies and spaces transform into geometric compositions. “The characters are merely puppets,” one critic remarked—indeed, the film’s fascination stems less from the plot than from its atmosphere. An Art Deco universe of opera, science fiction, and surrealism, like a luxurious dream that is simultaneously cool, artificial, and utterly overwhelming.
