In 1973, in California's San Fernando Valley, an unusual friendship develops between 15-year-old schoolboy Gary and 10-year-old photo assistant Alana. And amidst the everyday hustle and bustle of odd jobs and acting careers, friends and politics, vinyl and Super 8 films, more intense feelings develop over time.

Exceptional director Paul Thomas Anderson not only tells the story of an extraordinary love in the turbulent and confusing time of growing up, but also takes us on an atmospheric journey into the 1970s, into a life between bell bottoms, the oil crisis, New Hollywood and Motown. Cooper Hoffman, son of the legendary actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, and the Grammy-nominated musician Alana Haim inspire alongside established stars such as Bradley Cooper, Sean Penn and Tom Waits.
