Jean-Dominique Bauby, once editor-in-chief of the French magazine Elle, becomes completely paralysed after a stroke and can only communicate with his left eye. Despite the locked-in syndrome, he dictates his autobiography with the help of blinks, which he reflects on in flashbacks and fantasies. Director Julian Schnabel tells this true story with visual power and gallows humour. With Mathieu Amalric's moving performance and Janusz Kami?ski's intense camerawork, the film becomes a poetic homage to resilience and inner freedom.
