La cuccagna (Das Schlaraffenland)
After finishing school, Rosella wants her share of the economic miracle, whose comforts her average family sees daily on commercial television. But while searching for work, she discovers the darker side of the consumer paradise: behind respectable facades lie sexual exploitation and ruthless profiteers. Only in the young Giuliano does Rosella find a friend. Disillusioned with the world, the two seek death on a military training ground—a surreal maneuver. The brilliant actor-director Luciano Salce gave his friend Ennio Morricone his first solo assignments for soundtracks: “He taught me that even for unserious productions, one could create personal and substantial works.” *La cuccagna*, for all its satirical sharpness, is profoundly serious: its societal critique anticipates the finest moments of commedia by Dino Risi and De Sica, while flashes of melancholy evoke the sensibilities of Pietrangeli and Antonioni.
