La Captive du désert (Die Gefangene der Wüste)

From Raymond Depardon

With Sandrine Bonnaire, Dobi Koré, Fadi Taha, Badei Barka

Year 1989

Duration 98 min.

Language French

A fictionalized account of the kidnapping of Françoise Claustre, a French ethnologist captured in the mid-1970s by the Tubu—a nomadic tribe in northern Chad—and interviewed at the time by Depardon. A film that unfolds in a trance-like state, featuring Sandrine Bonnaire as a teacher held by resistance fighters during an arduous trek across the Sahara. Amidst the emptiness, memories, her own body, and the contents of her handbag form the final link to the world she left behind—surrounded only by desert sand and sky, a seemingly endless sea of intense yellow and blue. Solitude, alienation, and exhaustion. A single attempt to escape. No judgments, barely any explanation. An intensely physical film about the experience of being held hostage.
