Kiss Me Deadly
"The masterpiece of film noir," wrote Paul Schrader in 1973 in his groundbreaking re-evaluation of the genre. With "Kiss Me Deadly", Aldrich displays a creative freedom bordering on wondrous anarchy—a quality that thrilled and influenced aspiring filmmakers of the "Nouvelle Vague", from Chabrol to Godard (and generations following in their footsteps). Mickey Spillane’s reactionary source novel is thoroughly subverted: the opening credits run in reverse, and Aldrich’s anti-hero Mike Hammer (Ralph Meeker) is a greedy egomaniac whose toxic machismo and lethal materialism embody the dark undercurrents of the McCarthy era. Visuals (and sounds) lose their equilibrium as Hammer’s ruthless hunt for the "Great Whatsit" leads through a perverse paradise of depravity toward a nuclear catastrophe. By the end, the noir mystery has transformed into a science-fiction nightmare. (C.H.)
