In search of a legendary monster, a film crew lands on the remote Skull Island. There, they witness a bizarre ceremony in which the natives offer a sacrifice to their god, Kong. He turns out to be a giant ape with a weakness for blonde American women and eventually finds himself on Broadway as the eighth wonder of the world … Willis O’Brien’s sensational stop-motion technique brings to life a creature that initially appears as an animalistic threat, but which—first in the spotlight, then in that of the capitalist urban jungle—becomes a victim itself. Fay Wray, on the other hand, is considered cinema’s first “scream queen.” When she passed away in 2004, the lights on the Empire State Building were dimmed for 15 minutes in her honor.
