While living in exile on a small Italian island, the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda hires the son of a poor fisherman to personally deliver his mail. Until then, the young postman Mario Ruoppolo has led a humble life, though he has always dreamed of something greater. As a deep friendship develops between the two men, Mario is transformed by Neruda's influence: he discovers a passion for poetry and even manages to win the heart of his beloved Beatrice Russo with his verses.
