In the cramped, humble surroundings of her parents’ home, 17-year-old Marta waits for her fiancé Michele to return from the war. As a single mother, she faces the contempt of her community, and when the war ends and Michele does not return, she is promised in marriage to an older farmer. During the preparatory course for the village’s brides, she forms an unusual friendship with Lorenzo, the village’s openly gay ‘wedding planner’. Against the conservative backdrop of rural southern Italy, Lorenzo introduces her to a hidden community of gay men and ignites in Marta an indomitable desire to challenge social prejudices. In the first year of women’s suffrage in Italy, Marta embarks on a courageous journey to embrace her role as a self-assured woman, break down barriers and find her place in a changing world.
