Hyènes (Hyänen)

With just two feature films, director Djibril Diop Mambéty became an unforgettable figure in the world of cinema. Following *Touki Bouki* (1973), for *Hyènes* he transposes Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play *The Visit* to a fictional Senegalese village. Linguère Ramatou, now fabulously wealthy, returns there after decades and promises the villagers a huge sum of money – provided they kill the grocer who impregnated her in her youth and then abandoned her. In Mambéty’s hands, the familiar material becomes a visually stunning critique of neo-colonial capitalism.
