Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte

From Robert Aldrich

Year 1964

With "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?", Aldrich had established his own psychological thriller subgenre of horror films centered on aging star actresses; with his second and final contribution to this Grand Guignol wave, he repeated that success and created a baroque crown jewel of his oeuvre. In 1927, during a lavish ball at a Southern mansion, Charlotte Hollis’s (Bette Davis) married lover is brutally murdered. Decades later, the eccentric heiress is still believed to be the culprit. When she faces eviction, her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland) comes to her aid, but Charlotte is soon haunted by surreal apparitions. A sunny portrait of small-town life turns into a nightmarish mystery full of red herrings and masterfully staged scenes of horror. This thrilling play on perception expresses one of Aldrich’s central themes: it is the vision of a hostile world that drives Charlotte mad. (C.H.)
